I was asked to create a typeface based on a grid of circles that would conceptually illustrate the word “boil”. A poster was also designed which placed the resulting wordmark in an environment that enhanced the concept.

My approach to the word “boil” was based on the idea that boiling is a transformative process. In most cases, what goes into a pot of boiling water is very different than what comes out of it moments later. Contrasting the thin stroke of each letterform’s left side with the thicker stroke of the right side highlighted this idea of metamorphosis. The overall forms of each letter were decidedly rounded in reference to the bubbles created by the boiling process.

Because boiling food has the potential to create something edible out of something inedible, the poster utilized half-boiled ramen noodles to literally show the before and after of this transformation. In a fashion similar to the letterforms, the noodles’ inedible left side was contrasted against the cooked right side.
After designing both a typeface and a poster, I decided to seek out a practical application for the “boil” project in order to show the conceptual piece in a commercial and functional light.

I chose to use the “boil” poster to create a new name and album artwork for the band Switchfoot. Several bands were considered, but Switchfoot’s recurring lyrical themes of passing time, adaptability and coping with change paired well with the project’s preexisting themes. “Boil” was assigned as the new name of the reimagined band, while “Up & Out” was decided as the album title in an effort to emphasize movement and progression. Everything from track titles to color choices were thoughtfully selected to further the concept of transformation
